Professor Garry Walter AM is a child and adolescent psychiatrist of international renown. He is affiliated with The University of Sydney, where, among other roles, he has served as Professor at the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine, and, for over a decade, as Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He also has other professorial appointments in Australia and overseas. For several years, Professor Walter was Director of Thomas Walker Hospital (“Rivendell”), Australia’s flagship adolescent psychiatric hospital. For many years, he also served as Clinical Director of Child and Youth Mental Health Services at Royal North Shore Hospital and associated hospitals and community services in Northern Sydney Local Health District.

Professor Walter is International Editor-at-Large of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and was Editor of Australasian Psychiatry from 2001-2013. He has earned a number of key research awards and, as an author, he has published almost 400 papers on a range of topics in the mental health field. He has also delivered invited talks at major meetings and universities locally and abroad, including at Yale in 2011 to coincide with its centenary of child mental health research.

In his career, Professor Walter has provided advice and consultation to a variety of State, national and international bodies, including psychiatric associations, medical boards and governments, in relation to policies, program development and complex clinical, ethical and medicolegal cases. In 2016, he was also appointed to the part-time post of Foundation Medical Director of the Doctors’ Health Advisory Service.

Among other prizes, in 2009 Professor Walter was awarded a prestigious College Citation by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists for “a remarkable contribution to the College and the profession of psychiatry through his exceptional and tireless work as Editor of Australasian Psychiatry and as a leading investigator, educator, administrator and clinician”.

In 2012, Professor Walter was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to medicine.

Professor Walter has vast experience assessing, treating and providing expert advice about young people and others with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Respectful and compassionate, he is able to draw upon various therapies, including individual, parent, family and group counselling, as well as medication if required. Professor Walter is a strong believer in matching the therapy to the particular patient, rather than adopting a “one size fits all” approach. He enjoys working collaboratively with health professionals, schools and other agencies.

Professor Walter is enthusiastic about assisting people and organisations understand and tackle the various psychological problems that affect them. He sees children, adolescents and young adults, and others following consultation.
